I plugged in the Crosley C20 to the Phono input of the amp (first making sure the output switch was set to Phono) and started playing a selection of records from Depeche Mode’s Speak & Spell to Pink Floyd’s The Wall. It’s a capable stereo system for a small space, but the C20 really made the system sing.Įquipped with a pre-mounted Ortofon OM10 cartridge Brad Moon I have a vintage JVC amp I bought 30 years ago, and recently upgraded the speakers to a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers -that are compact enough to fit on my bookshelves. The setup in my office isn’t particularly spectacular. If you buy a C20 and find a felt mat in the box, you don’t need it. In the end, ditching the included mat and going with the acrylic platter on its own completely resolved the issue (the acrylic won’t damage the vinyl). While attempting to figure out what was causing the issue with the cartridge bumping, I switched back and forth between between the acrylic platter and the standard stainless steel version + mat used in the C10 and there is definitely a noticeable difference between the two, with the acrylic offering a real improvement in sound. That acrylic platter is designed to reduce resonance and should also reduce static during playback. However, after some digging around, it was confirmed that the acrylic platter (which appears to be the $120 Pro-Ject Acryl it) is meant to be used without a mat. Crosley included a felt turntable mat in the box, but I found that with 180g records and warped records, the back of the cartridge would sometimes make contact with the vinyl. I ran into an initial issue after setting up the C20. The felt mat turned out to be unnecessary, but the removable, clear cover is useful Brad Moon There’s no speed switch, so changing speeds requires lifting off the platter and using an included tool to move the belt between pulleys. It’s also going to keep people who switch between 45s and LPs busy. Like the C10, this is a manual return turntable, so you’ll need to watch for the end of a record.
